Disabled Sailing Association of Ontario

QQDSP offers organizations in the community an opportunity to bring groups of 5 to 20 individuals down to the waterfront for either regular weekly or biweekly group sails, or a one time afternoon of sailing and fun.

Group sails - the organization purchases "floating" memberships at $50/each based on the number of people they will bring sailing each week. Floating memberships are transferable between participants of the member organization, enabling a different group to come down each week.

An afternoon of sailing and fun - the organization purchases a single day membership at $15/person and then pays $15/person for the afternoon sail.

Here are some organizations that sail with us:

  • CHIRS (Community Head Injury Resource Services)
  • NRIO (Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute of Ontario)
  • ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development
  • Lyndhurst Centre (Toronto Rehab)
  • Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital
  • PHABIS (Peel Halton Dufferin Acquired Brain Injury Services)
  • Spinal Cord Injury Ontario
  • Epilepsy Toronto
  • Addus
  • Community Living
  • DANI-Toronto
  • Montage Support
  • New Visions Toronto

Participant quote: "Sailing was the experience of a lifetime.”

Supporting staff: “Words cannot express what it was like to watch them from the shore, out of their chairs and free in the water.”

QQDSP's Outreach Program offers groups Floating Memberships; multiple clients can share one membership on a rotating basis.

Here's an example of how it works

Your group registers 3 floating annual memberships at $50 each, you can bring any 3 participants to sail every time you come. Group members will pay $15 per person per sail.

For groups that only plan on sailing once or twice per season, each sailor can purchase a $15 one-day membership, plus pay the regular $15 sailing fee.

We also encourage participants to become “regular” members if they want to sail at their own leisure on weekends or take part in other program activities.

  • QQDSP is open from mid-May to mid-September, every Wednesday to Sunday from 12 noon to 6 pm.
  • Outreach Groups can book a sail from Wednesday to Friday between 12 noon and 2 pm. Tuesday bookings for Outreach groups are also possible by special arrangement (based on the availability of volunteers and skippers).
  • QQDSP has 6 Martin 16 sailboats, and each can accommodate 1 client and 1 qualified QQDSP sailing companion.
  • Groups that do not require the use of a Voyager power lift can book sails on our 22-foot keelboats which can accommodate groups of 6 , plus 1 QQDSP volunteer skipper.
  • Sails typically last 1.5 hours.

What level of mobility is required?
The only requirement is that participants be able to bend a minimum of 30 degrees at the waist (for positioning in the boat). We have not encountered any other limitations in accommodating individuals with mobility impairments. Hoyer Lifts and other transfer techniques are used as needed to help participants in and out of the boats.

Is sailing experience needed?
Previous experience is not needed to participate. Our volunteers are trained to instruct and coach participants, or to take control if necessary.

Do our program staff need to attend?
Yes, in most cases. The staff and volunteers at QQDSP have general training and awareness of disability issues, but are not trained in the specific needs of any given individual.

Do you need to know how to swim?
The boats we sail (Martin 16s) are untippable, therefore participants are not required to know how to swim. We also require that Life jackets (provided) be worn at all times while on the dock and in the boat.

How many can fit on board?
The Martin 16 holds one sailor, and one qualified volunteer (provided) sitting behind them. We also have two 22-foot keelboats which will accommodate up to five participants at a time. The keel boat is somewhat less accessible than the Martin, and if you wish to use this vessel, this should be arranged prior to the scheduled sailing day.

* In exceptional cases and weather permitting, support staff may be able to take the role of a volunteer aboard the Martin 16. Also, staff members with sufficient sailing experience (assessed by the staff at QQDSP) may also take on this role.

How much does it Cost?
One transferable Membership per member is required. For example, if you purchase four memberships, you can bring four different (or same members) each time, and just pay the sailing fee per member/sail every time.

If you only plan to come once or twice per season, you can purchase a One Day Membership plus Sailing Fee for each participant. No charge for support staff.

Are there accessible washrooms?
Yes, We have accessible washrooms, but they do not have an automatic door, so QQDSP staff are happy to open the door for people who require assistance. The washrooms are located right beside our club.
