Michael Townsend loved to sail and share that joy with others. Michael had a sixth sense for the wind and his surroundings that would make you forget that he was blind; he wanted to enable his community to share the empowerment and freedom on the water that he so loved.

This event has been organized for adults & children, to provide persons with disabilities with the opportunity to experience this unique recreational activity. Each participant will be given a specific ½ -hour time slot in one of two 16 ft. Martin sailboats, including instruction. The Disabled Sailing Association of Ontario will provide experienced instructors/volunteers for each participant.

There is no cost to participants. Life jackets and all related equipment will be provided. A Hoyer lift will be available to transfer people with limited mobility into the sailboats. There is limited space available on a first-come first-serve basis. Refreshments and light snacks will be provided. Participants with special diets/needs should provide their own food.

Directions to Kawartha Park Marina

(From Peterborough/Lakefield)

  • Travel north from Peterborough to Lakefield.
  • Continue north from the traffic lights at Young’s Point towards Burleigh Falls.
  • Travel 5.8 km then turn right onto Kawartha Park Road.
  • After driving 1km, turn right onto a cottage road named Hiawatha Lane (watch your speed as the road is rough and has lots of pedestrians).
  • Kawartha Park Marina is 0.5 km along Hiawatha Lane. Free parking is provided courtesy of Kawartha Park Marina.
