2017 DSAO Board of Directors

The mission of DSAO is to enable Ontarians with disabilities to experience therapeutic, recreational and social rehabilitation through the freedom of independent sailing.

The DSAO Board of Directors provides the governance and strategic direction for the Association. The members of the Board bring an array of skills, expertise and sailing experience to fulfill their responsibilities.

At the November 2016 Annual General Meeting, the DSAO Membership elected the following Board of Directors:

DSAO is a member run organization governed by a Board of Directors. In order to be on the Board of Directors of DSAO you must already be a member in good standing or you must become a member within 10 days of appointment.

Members of the Board of Directors are volunteers. No member of the Board of Directors may receive remuneration for their efforts. All members of the Board are expected to attend monthly board meetings and to be involved in at least one committee. All board members are responsible for fundraising initiatives.

The role of the President is to manage the Board operations and administration of the Association in discharging the Board’s responsibilities. They chair DSAO board meetings and the Annual General Meeting, and provides leadership to the Board of Directors, which sets policy. The President also encourages the Board's role in strategic planning and appoints the chairpersons of committees, in consultation with other Board members.

The role of the Past President is to provide background, having just served as President, and offer advice on Board operations and administration of the Association in discharging the Board’s responsibilities. The Past President may be called upon to sit on specifically called assignments or standing committees (i.e., By-laws, Discipline, Nomination).

The role of the Vice President is to serve as second in command. They assist the President according to the President's discretion, and presides in the absence of the President. They are responsible for Membership, with a special focus on increasing it. Social: encourage all members participation in social events. The Vice President creates and maintains a long-range plan for the Association, working with the Board of Directors and individual committees to activate plans consistent with Members’ needs and budgetary restraints. They recommend and prioritize projects to the Board of Directors in harmony with Members’ needs and prudent fiscal planning.

The role of the Treasurer is to deal with all aspects relating to the sound financial performance of the Association, including keeping a full and accurate account of its receipts and disbursements. They consult with individual Directors and the Manager regarding budget requirements in anticipation of the annual budget preparation. They reconcile the individual portfolio budget status with the other Directors on the Board and encourages these budget targets to be met. They have the care and custody of all the funds and securities of the Organization and deposits the same in the name of the Association in such banks or depositories as the Board of Directors may direct. They provide advice to the Board of Directors regarding preferred financing.

The role of the Secretary is to book meetings and event space on behalf of the Board of Directors, and take and distribute minutes at the monthly board meetings and at the Annual General Meeting. They create, edit and/or proofread written materials such as newsletters, website information, annual reports. They ensure effective management of the Association's records.

The role of the Directors is for special projects.
